In June of 2006 members of the Westminster Presbyterian Church headed to New Orleans and on to Kiln, Mississippi with the youth group to assist
families as they worked to rebuild after Hurricane Katrina. Having traveled to Afghanistan, I was shocked to experience a similar gut
wrenching feeling as I saw the vast areas of devastation which covered many miles and effected several states. I recognized that behind all
those damaged buildings were numerous people that had been dislocated from everything they held dear. Many lost family members and everything
that they and their families had worked for for generations. How different is this result from that of the war that has raged in
Afghanistan for years and the destruction I saw there?
I have returned twice to New Orleans in 2008 to revisit the families that we assisted and to wander through all of the areas that flooded. I
continue to be shocked to see in my own country the same short-term memory that allows us to distance ourselves from the fact that war
continues to devastate families in Afghanistan. Many Americans continue with business as usual while that war is waged and levies remain
questionably secure.
We have a Diaspora within our own country. Families from the south were forced to resettle far from home in areas unfamiliar with the culture of
New Orleans. This has not required learning a different language as most Afghans face in coming to the United States however the experience of
being ripped from the familiar by traumatic events is much the same.
Let us remember that there is still much work to be done and that out of the ashes and destruction a phoenix may rise. I smile as I round a
corner and discover a pocket of recovery where people have joined together to help one another and I experience in a small way the
resiliency of humanity both in Afghanistan and New Orleans.

- Field Trip to Eastfield Village in East Nassau, New York, Oct. 21, 2006
Eastfield Village located in East Nassau is the dream and creation of Don Carpentier, a man dedicated to the preservation and perpetuation of Colonial American architecture, crafts, and heritage. Almost single handedly over more than three decades, Don has created a piece of living American History in rural Rensselaer County.
On Saturday October 21, 2006, Don opened Eastfield Village to the Schenectady Photographic Society. This was a rare opportunity to roam and photograph the architectural gems that Don has saved and brought to Eastfield Village. Eastfield's buildings include a general store, tavern, church, Dutch barn, salt box house, blacksmith shop, woodshop, doctor's office, shoe shop, and print shop; as well as a collection of smaller buildings.
